One was called the "textus receptus" meaning "recieved text" and the other was called "Alexandrian text" after the city. The NIV and many others are copied from the Alexandrian text because it was the older of the two transcripts. KJV and some others were written based on the recieved text. It has been discovered relatively recently that the KJV is actually more accurate and a better translation compared to the same texts the Apostles used. The reason is that there was a cult-like group that didn't like certain things that were in the bible such as the trinity (see Acts 8:37 in the KJV and the NIV to see what I mean). Many churches today use the cult-like translation of the bible (including Jehovah Witnesses) usually because it is an easier read--it is written on an 8th grade reading level instead of the KJV's 12th grade reading level. I am of the opinion that if you are just reading the bible for a refresher of what's in there, then the NIV is fine. If you are looking to actually study and learn from the bible, I would go with the KJV. I usually read the NKJV with the KJV close by in case I don't understand something. NKJV is the KJV without the "Shakespearean" wording such as "cometh". NKJV uses modern English but is still based on the KJV. The reason why the KJV is the most popular is because from the 1600's until the 1950's, it was pretty much the only translation printed in English. I hope this makes sense to you and I hope it helps.Dean Clousehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10373121094002057688noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4840769976858192920.post-53781561384986844702008-02-19T19:45:00.000-05:002008-02-19T19:45:00.000-05:00I've been searching for a readable version of the ...I've been searching for a readable version of the bible and to not be misled by what someone's opinion of the text means.
